A Massive Ketchup Debate
Does it go in the fridge?!
Kara's family always stored the Ketchup in the cupboard, while Molly's family kept it in the fridge.
Heinz stirred up a massive Ketchup debate on social media in 2023 when they finally said, "Ketchup should be refrigerated!" This was after years of publicizing how Ketchup was shelf-stable indefinitely. Why the change of tart over the vinegar-based product? The agency primarily sourced mold growing in the cap, which could cause issues. It was also warned that Ketchup may not be as fresh and may change texture and color if unrefrigerated.
However, as of the date of publication, the United States Department of Agriculture STILL says that shelf-stable foods such as Ketchup do not need to be refrigerated and are "safe indefinitely."
Whether you are a refrigerator family or not, here are the general expiration recommendations for condiments:
Ketchup, cocktail, or chili sauce – Refrigerate for 6 months
Chutney – Refrigerate for 1 to 2 months
Horseradish – Refrigerate for 3 to 4 months
Mustard – Refrigerate for 12 months
Olives – Refrigerate for 2 weeks
Pickles – Refrigerate for 1 to 3 months
